FROM THE MCDOWELL NEWS:
By MIKE CONLEY
When he was a sophomore at Nebo High School, David Hicks started working in auto body repair. He got interested in it and would go on to work at various body shops in McDowell and other places.
About 15 years ago, Hicks decided it was time for him to operate his own body shop and go into business for himself. He opened Auto Tech Collision Center at 3839 U.S. 70 East between Marion and Nebo.
For a long time, Hicks did much of the work himself. Now, he has a 4,500-square-foot shop and a 252-square-foot mechanical room for other repairs. His business also has six workers, not including himself.
Auto Tech Collision Center does various kinds of repair work for automobile bodies. This includes cars and trucks damaged in wrecks or from other kinds of damage, like hail. On Thursday, Hicks’ shop was filled with autos that were being repaired because of hail damage.
The employees at Auto Tech work on antique cars, collision repairs and paint needs. They fix shattered windows and install new glass. They also work on mechanical repairs that are related to collisions and frame repair, too.
When he worked on his own, Hicks did the body repairs alone. Now that he has expanded his business, he has created new jobs and provided even better service to customers.
“People are pleased when they get their car done,” said Hicks, who is 57. “It’s a good feeling.”
“It’s rewarding being able to create jobs and send out a good finished product you can feel good about,”
